The Košice Peace Marathon, first run in 1924, is the oldest marathon in Europe and the second oldest in the world after Boston. It adopted "Peace" in its title after World War II, reflecting the city's position in a region that had passed between Hungarian, Czechoslovak, and briefly Slovak First Republic jurisdiction within a single generation. Slovakia's commemorative euro program has increasingly used the 2 euro coin to mark anniversaries of civic and cultural institutions rather than purely political milestones — this centenary issue fits squarely in that pattern.
