Obverse description A detailed frontal view of the Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church) in Frankfurt, Hesse, rendered in high relief at the centre of the field. The neoclassical church façade with its prominent dome and bell tower occupies most of the design area. The inscription HESSEN appears to the right of the building in the field. Twelve five-pointed stars encircle the design near the rim, referencing the European Union motif.

Additional information

The 2009 German federal states commemorative series issued coins for all sixteen Länder across five years, with Hessen's entry depicting the Paulskirche in Frankfurt — the seat of the first freely elected German parliament in 1848. The gold plating on this piece is a commercial aftermarket addition, not an official Bundesbank product; the underlying coin is standard bimetallic issue.

Such plated examples hold no numismatic premium over circulated specimens.
