Germany's federal commemorative 2 euro program, which began in 2006, issues coins for each of the sixteen Bundesländer in sequence. The Hessen issue appeared in 2009 as part of that rotation. Platinum-plated versions were not produced by the Bundesrepublik Deutschland mints — these are privately produced collector items, applied after the fact, and carry no official status from any issuing authority.
