Hungary joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, and that year produced euro cent pattern coins in anticipation of eventual eurozone accession — an event that has still not occurred as of this writing. These pieces were never legal tender and were not released for general circulation, produced strictly as preparatory technical strikes while Hungary retained the forint.
Eurozone entry requires meeting the Maastricht criteria on inflation, deficit, and debt — targets Hungary has repeatedly failed to satisfy, pushing projected adoption dates back by decades.
