Latvia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2014, making this the first year of issue. The decision was politically contentious domestically — a 2012 public poll showed a majority of Latvians opposed euro adoption, yet the government pressed forward, meeting all Maastricht convergence criteria ahead of schedule.
