Italy was among the eleven original eurozone members that introduced euro coinage on January 1, 2002, retiring the lira after a currency that had survived — in various forms — since the medieval period. The transition required the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato to produce billions of coins across all eight denominations before launch, with much of the low-denomination stock struck years in advance and held in reserve.
The specific reverse design used on Italian euro cents was selected through a process overseen by the Italian mint rather than a pan-European competition, giving each member state latitude to express national identity on the national side.
