The Canton de Rétiers is a small administrative division in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. This piece is a local émission de nécessité or jeton de commerce — privately issued token coinage produced by French cantons, municipalities, and commercial associations during the 1990s to serve promotional or small-circulation exchange purposes. France's transition toward the euro made such issues briefly fashionable as collectibles before the single currency rendered them entirely ceremonial.
