Monaco's 2 euro commemorative program is tightly constrained by the Eurozone agreement governing microstates — the principality is allocated a strictly limited annual mintage, making nearly every Monaco commemorative scarce relative to demand. This 2024 issue marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Charles V of Monaco, better known as Charles I of Genoa, who died in 1524 having established the Grimaldi family's legal claim to permanent sovereignty over the Rock — a claim that survived French annexation, Napoleonic dissolution, and two World Wars largely intact.
