The shield is surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. A circular Latin legend runs between the inner beaded border and an outer beaded rim, reading PHILIPPVS . II . DEI GRATIA, with the mint and assayer marks S and C flanking the shield in the field. The overall design faithfully replicates the typology of 16th-century Spanish gold escudo coinage of Philip II. |
