Obverse lettering PHILIP·V·D·G·HISPAN·ET·IND·REX 1741
Reverse description The crowned quartered arms of Spain occupy the central field, featuring the castles of Castile and the lions of León in the principal quarters, with the fleurs-de-lis of the French Bourbon dynasty in an inescutcheon at the center, reflecting Philip V's dynastic origins. The shield is surmounted by a large ornate royal crown. The mint mark S and assayer initials PJ appear at the base of the design between rosette stops, identifying this piece as a product of the Seville mint. The surrounding Latin legend INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI encircles the design, translating as 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' A milled border frames the entire reverse.
