Obverse description Central field bears the quartered royal arms of Spain — displaying castles, lions, the pomegranate of Granada, and the arms of Portugal — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The shield is encircled by a beaded inner border. The circular Latin legend reads PHILIPVS · III · D · G with the assayer letter C and denomination mark II visible flanking the shield. The coin exhibits the characteristic broad, flat flan produced by the roller mill (ingenio de molino) of the Segovia mint, with a prominent milled or grained edge.
