Obverse description Central field dominated by the quartered royal shield of the Spanish Habsburgs, displaying the arms of Castile, León, Aragon, and Granada, surmounted by an ornate crown. The mint mark 'S' and assayer initial 'B' appear to the left of the shield, with the denomination mark 'II' to the right. The legend PHILIPPVS · III · D · G runs along the periphery in Latin characters, partially visible on the irregular flan. The overall style is characteristic of hammered coinage of the period, with a bold though slightly off-center strike typical of cob-style escudos produced at the Seville mint.
