Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned quartered shield of Spain, displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León in alternate quarters, with Granada in the base point, surmounted by a royal crown in high relief. The mint mark B (Barcelona) appears to the left of the shield and the assayer's initial A to the right. A beaded inner circle frames the shield, with the partial Latin legend disposed around the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan, characteristic of hammered cob coinage.
