Obverse description At center, the oval shield of Bern displaying the walking bear passant to sinister on a diagonally divided field, the whole enclosed within a decorative oval cartouche. The shield is surmounted by a floral crown of five arches adorned with rosettes. Flanking the shield on either side is a symmetrical olive or laurel garland. The circumferential legend RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS appears in raised Latin lettering around the periphery, with a small ornamental device at the base of the design.
