Frankfurt struck pattern pieces in silver for the 1764 coronation of Joseph II as Holy Roman Emperor — an event the city hosted by ancient privilege, giving its mint unusual latitude to produce speculative and commemorative strikings alongside official coinage. This piece is a silver strike of a gold ducat die, a practice that allowed the city's mint to test or showcase a design without committing precious metal.
JuF 841 is among the scarcer coronation patterns from this occasion. The original gold ducat dies were used without modification, leaving the silver planchet slightly mismatched to a design optimized for gold's different flow characteristics under the press.
