Aanvullende informatie

Maximilian I had been Duke of Bavaria since 1597, but 1618 was the year that would define his reign: the Defenestration of Prague in May triggered the Thirty Years' War, a conflict in which he would emerge as one of the most consequential Catholic commanders, eventually receiving the Electoral dignity stripped from the Palatinate branch of the Wittelsbachs. Whether this piece was struck before or after May is unknowable, but no Bavarian gold from this year sits outside that shadow.

The .986 fineness places it among the purer gold coinages of the period — Bavarian ducats of this era were consistently well-regarded in international trade precisely because of that standard.
