Maximilian Henry of Bavaria held the See of Liège from 1650 until his death in 1688 while simultaneously serving as Archbishop-Elector of Cologne — a concentration of ecclesiastical offices that made him one of the most politically consequential princes of the church in the Holy Roman Empire. His tenure in Liège was marked by persistent conflict between episcopal authority and the city's powerful guilds, and coinage issued under his name functioned as much as a statement of jurisdictional control as anything else.
The Delmonte G#360 attribution places this piece within a well-documented sequence, though the long reign span means die characteristics vary considerably across the series.
