| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device depicts a pelican in her piety, standing on a grassy mound and pecking at her own breast to feed her young nestlings below, with a serpent coiled at the base to the left. The bird is rendered in fine relief with detailed feathering. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device within a beaded border, reading SALVTEM EX INIMICIS NOSTRIS ('Salvation from our enemies'), a biblical phrase from Luke 1:71 serving as the coronation motto. The composition is characteristic of the refined hammered goldsmith work of the Bohemian mint at Prague in the early seventeenth century. |
