| Reverse description | The reverse presents a devotional image of the Virgin Mary seated facing, nimbed and set within a mandorla, holding the Christ Child before her in a tender embrace, both figures rendered in the Italo-Byzantine devotional tradition. The composition occupies the full central field within a beaded inner border, conveying a hieratic solemnity typical of Italian civic coinage of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The surrounding legend VIRGO MARIA PROTEGE encircles the device, separated by a rope-pattern border and punctuated by decorative rosette and floral stops. A suspension hole is visible at the top of the coin, indicating the piece was at some point mounted or worn as a devotional pendant. |
