Leopold I's Hungarian ducat issues of this period were struck at Kremnitz (Körmöcbánya), the oldest continuously operating mint in Europe and the dominant source of Hungarian gold throughout the Habsburg period. The years 1661–1667 fall squarely within the opening phase of the Long Turkish War, when Ottoman pressure on the Hungarian frontier was intensifying and the Viennese court was simultaneously managing a financially exhausted treasury. Multi-ducat pieces of this type functioned primarily as presentation and trade coins rather than everyday exchange instruments.
The ÉH#988 attribution places this within Erdélyi and Huszár's taxonomy for the type, with H#1311 cross-referencing Huszár's independent corpus.
