| Aanvullende informatie |
Gerold II von Zurlauben served as abbot of Rheinau from 1696 until his death in 1735, presiding over one of the oldest Benedictine houses on the Rhine — founded in the 8th century on a river island near Schaffhausen. Rheinau held imperial immediacy, meaning the abbot answered directly to the Emperor rather than any territorial lord, a status that conferred the right to strike coinage. This uniface piece, struck in silver despite its ducat denomination, reflects the ceremonial rather than monetary function of abbatial coinages: produced for presentation, not circulation.
