Frederik III's consolidation of absolute monarchy in Denmark-Norway, formalized by the Kongelov of 1665, made that year politically charged in ways that almost certainly influenced royal coinage production. Gold ducats of this reign were struck at Christiania and served diplomatic and presentation functions far more than commercial ones — very few entered anything resembling ordinary circulation. Rønning's census work suggests surviving examples are genuinely rare, not merely scarce by collector convention.
The .979 fineness is characteristic of the ducat standard maintained across northern European courts of the period, tied to the long-established Rhine ducat tradition.
