| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Imperial Eagle of Saint John displayed at center, its wings spread and head turned to sinister, clutching in its talons the quartered royal arms of Castile and León, Aragon and Sicily, with Granada in base, all rendered in the Gothic heraldic style of the Catholic Monarchs. The eagle's plumage is finely detailed in the hammered relief typical of late 15th- and early 16th-century Spanish gold coinage. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the peripheral legend. The Latin inscription surrounding the shield and eagle reads: SVB : VMBRA : ALARVM : TVARVM, a devotional phrase meaning 'Under the shadow of Thy wings', drawn from the Psalms. |
