Obverse description Draped bust of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg facing right, with long flowing hair falling to the shoulder, wearing an elaborately draped mantle. The portrait is rendered in a bold baroque relief style, occupying the majority of the coin's field. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the ducal title legend arranged around the periphery in Latin capitals.

Reverse description The reverse bears an entirely epigraphic design consisting of eight lines of Latin inscription filling the field, recording the biographical and funerary data of Duke Ernest I: his birth on 25 December 1601, death on 26 March 1675, a reign of 35 years, an age of 73 years and 3 months and 1 day, and his interment on 4 June 1675. The text is rendered in a crisp serif capital lettering with a beaded border encircling the entire composition. There is no figurative imagery; the inscription itself serves as the sole commemorative element.
