Obverse description Fully armored knight standing facing right within a dotted inner circle, the date divided on either side of the figure, the knight's right hand raising a sword and his left hand grasping a bundle of seven arrows — the symbol of the seven United Provinces. The outer legend, rendered in Latin capital letters, runs continuously around the periphery and terminates with the Middelburg mint mark (castle symbol). The design is characteristic of the Dutch provincial ducat tradition, with bold, slightly irregular strike typical of hammered gold coinage.
