The escutcheon displays the heraldic quarters associated with the see of Münster and the von Galen family. The circumferential legend in Latin reads: * CHRIST : BERN : D • G • EPIS • & PRINCEPS • MONAS, identifying Christoph Bernhard von Galen as Bishop and Prince of Münster by the grace of God.
