Christine Friederike of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld died in 1743 at age nineteen, barely two years after her marriage to Wilhelm Heinrich of Saxe-Eisenach. Memorial ducat issues for minor German dynastic figures of this period were typically funded by the grieving court itself and struck in tiny quantities — Grasser 482 is among the less frequently encountered of the Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld memorial pieces. The joint obverse naming both Christian Ernest and Francis Josias reflects the co-regency arrangement that governed the duchy through much of the 1730s and 1740s.
