This piece belongs to a category of German private gold issues struck in the early 1960s by firms catering to the collector and souvenir trade — not official Bundesrepublik coinage, hence the "X" prefix in the Unusual World Coins reference. Kennedy's June 1963 European tour, which culminated in his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech on June 26th, generated an enormous commercial response across West Germany, and medal and coin producers moved quickly to capitalize on it.
Kennedy was assassinated five months after that Berlin appearance.
