Additional information

The "Aureus Magnus" series was produced by a private German medal maker in the early postwar decades, issued outside any state mint authority and carrying no legal tender status. These pieces occupied a gray zone common in 1950s–60s West Germany, where demand for gold holdings — suppressed under Allied occupation controls and then liberalized — created a market for gold pieces denominated in archaic units like the ducat, a denomination Germany had not officially struck since the imperial period.

Graul 101 is the standard reference for this type within the series catalog.
