Regensburg occupied a peculiar position in the Holy Roman Empire — simultaneously a Free Imperial City and, from 1663 onward, the permanent seat of the Reichstag. That perpetual diet, never dissolved until Napoleon ended the Empire in 1806, made the city a stage for continuous imperial politics. Coinage from this period reflects that status directly: the right to strike gold was both a privilege jealously defended and a practical necessity for a city hosting diplomats, princes, and their retinues for decades on end.
The 1711–1740 span brackets the reign of Charles VI, under whose authority the city's minting rights were periodically confirmed.
