Beschrijving voorzijde Crowned bust of Fernando I facing left, wearing a jewelled crown adorned with floral finials, the royal effigy draped in a mantle with visible collar detail, set within a beaded inner circle. The portrait is rendered in the late Gothic hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Navarrese coinage. The Latin legend surrounding the effigy reads FERDINANDVS : D : G : REX : NAVARE, identifying the monarch as King of Navarre by the grace of God.

Aanvullende informatie

Fernando I of Navarre is Fernando II of Aragón — the same Ferdinand who, with Isabel, completed the Reconquista and funded Columbus. Navarre itself had been seized by Castilian and Aragonese forces in 1512, and these ducados were struck during the three years Fernando held the kingdom before his death in January 1516, making this a transitional issue from a conquest still being consolidated.
