The portrait is rendered in the late Gothic hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Navarrese coinage. Fernando I of Navarre is Fernando II of Aragón — the same Ferdinand who, with Isabel, completed the Reconquista and funded Columbus. Navarre itself had been seized by Castilian and Aragonese forces in 1512, and these ducados were struck during the three years Fernando held the kingdom before his death in January 1516, making this a transitional issue from a conquest still being consolidated.
