Greece's 1982 coinage reform introduced a redesigned series under the newly elected PASOK government, which had campaigned aggressively on a platform of modernization and Europeanization — the updated lettering on this type reflects a broader typographic standardization pushed through the mint at that time. The nickel brass alloy was itself a compromise, adopted to reduce costs as Greece negotiated its first years of EEC membership while managing persistent inflation.
