Vincent I became Duke of Mantua in 1587 following the death of his father Guglielmo, inheriting both the Gonzaga court and its considerable debts. The 2 Doppie denomination — a heavy double ducat-weight piece — was less a workhorse of commerce than a demonstration of ducal prestige, struck in limited runs and frequently exchanged as diplomatic gifts among northern Italian courts. Mantua's zecca was never prolific by the standards of Milan or Venice.
The MIR LOM 532 attribution distinguishes this from related Vincent I gold issues; multiple die pairings exist for his reign, and misattributions between the single and double Doppie are not uncommon in older auction records.
