| Obverse description | Armored bust of Duke Charles I of Mantua facing right, wearing a gorget and cuirass with elaborate ornamentation, his hair flowing in loose curls. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the Italian Baroque manner, occupying the central field within a beaded inner circle. The date 1629 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the portrait. The circumferential legend reads CAROLVS I D G DVX MANT, identifying the ruler by name and title. |
