Landau was besieged twice during the War of the Spanish Succession — first by the French in 1702, then by Imperial forces in 1713. This piece dates to the second siege, when the city's garrison under French command found itself blockaded by forces loyal to Charles VI. Siege coinages of this type were struck from whatever metal the besieged authority could commandeer, melted plate and jewelry included, which accounts for the frequent weight irregularities seen across the series despite nominal standards.
The 1713 siege ended with the Peace of Utrecht already signed — the garrison held on after the war was effectively over.
