The Bank of Middletown was chartered in Middletown, Connecticut, and operated through the Free Banking period — one of hundreds of state-chartered institutions whose notes circulated locally but traded at a discount the further they traveled from home. Danforth, Underwood & Co. were among the most prolific bank note engravers of the antebellum period, with offices in New York and Philadelphia, supplying plates to institutions across the northeastern states.
The long date range reflects standard practice: a single plate series remained in use across multiple charter renewals until the National Banking Acts of 1863–64 effectively ended state bank note issuance by taxing it out of existence.
