Palau's wildlife coin program, running since the late 1990s, has produced dozens of species issues — most featuring Pacific fauna. The Darien Stubfoot Toad (Atelopus spurrelli) is a conspicuous outlier: a Colombian and Panamanian species with no geographic connection to Palau whatsoever. The republic's use of its sovereign minting rights to license exotic wildlife themes for the collector market is purely commercial, a practice it shares with several other small Pacific island nations whose coin programs are administered largely by European minting houses.
The species itself was last confirmed in the wild in the 1990s and is currently listed as critically endangered, possibly extinct.
