Nanaimo's Marine Festival trade dollar program ran for several decades as a promotional currency redeemable at participating local businesses during the annual festival week. These pieces circulated in a genuinely functional sense — merchants accepted them, and the program was one of the more sustained civic scrip operations in British Columbia. The 1992 issue coincides with the festival's long-running Great International Bathtub Race legacy, though by that point the original cross-strait bathtub race to Vancouver had already been discontinued after 1997's predecessor events wound down the open-water format.
