| Obverse description | Central depiction of The Bastion, the historic Hudson's Bay Company wooden blockhouse tower of Nanaimo, rendered in fine relief with horizontal timber-work detailing and a staircase at its base. An anchor symbol appears to the left of the tower and a second anchor to the right, flanking the central motif in the field. The legend '26th ANNUAL BATHTUB RACE' arcs across the upper periphery within a beaded border, while 'GOOD FOR TWO DOLLARS IN NANAIMO' curves along the lower periphery. Nanaimo's Marine Festival trade dollar program ran for several decades as a promotional currency redeemable at participating local businesses during the annual festival week. These pieces circulated in a genuinely functional sense — merchants accepted them, and the program was one of the more sustained civic scrip operations in British Columbia. The 1992 issue coincides with the festival's long-running Great International Bathtub Race legacy, though by that point the original cross-strait bathtub race to Vancouver had already been discontinued after 1997's predecessor events wound down the open-water format.
