Palau has issued automotive-themed coins since the mid-2000s, targeting the collector novelty market rather than any monetary function — these pieces never circulate and are produced specifically for themed sets. The SLS AMG, revived in 2010 as a spiritual successor to the original 300SL Gullwing, was still in its first model year when this coin was struck, making the licensing arrangement unusually timely.
