Palau has operated a prolific commemorative coin program since the mid-1990s, largely administered through foreign minting and distribution partners rather than any domestic monetary infrastructure — the islands have no mint of their own. The program generates revenue through collector sales, not circulation, and religious iconography has been a recurring theme throughout it.

KM#735 is one of several issues in a series referencing Leonardo da Vinci's mural in Milan, painted directly onto the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie between approximately 1495 and 1498 using an experimental dry-plaster technique that began deteriorating almost immediately after completion.
