Brunei's independence from British protection came on January 1, 1984, making 2004 the twentieth anniversary this coin commemorates. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah had resisted independence longer than most regional neighbors, partly because the existing arrangement preserved British military guarantees — the Gurkha garrison in Seria was a genuine strategic asset, not a symbolic holdover.
KM#80 is a copper-nickel issue in a series that Brunei has used consistently for commemoratives, reserving silver and gold strikes for separate collector editions released alongside.
