British Guiana's colonial government issued paper currency directly — not through a commercial bank — which was unusual for the region at the time. These government-issued notes replaced an earlier series and were produced during a period when the colony's sugar economy was adjusting to severe postwar price volatility; the 1920–21 sugar crash hit British Guiana particularly hard, compressing trade volumes and the practical need for higher-denomination paper in everyday exchange.
