Obverse description The obverse features the national arms of Liberia displayed within an ornate shield, depicting a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree to the right with a rising sun on the horizon, a flying dove in the upper left, and an anchor with a shovel in the lower portion of the shield. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters, while the date 1983 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The design is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field, characteristic of piedfort coinage.
