Obverse description Crowned right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as engraved by Robert Dark Maklouf, wearing the George IV State Diadem and a pearl drop earring with a delicate necklace at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field, framed by a continuous inner beaded border. The legend ELIZABETH II · TWO DOLLARS · COOK ISLANDS arcs around the periphery, with the date 2005 positioned at the base, and the engraver's initials RDM appear discreetly at the truncation.

Additional information

Part of a Cook Islands wildlife series that leaned heavily on the country's association with Pacific biodiversity, this issue was produced for the collector market rather than circulation — Cook Islands had long used such programs as a revenue mechanism, licensing designs through foreign minting agencies. The Yellow Crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus auriceps) is native to New Zealand's forests, not the Cook Islands themselves, a geographic looseness that was entirely routine for this type of sovereign-licensed commemorative.
