Reverse description Full-length frontal icon-style portrait of Saint Vladimir Sviatoslavich the Great, Grand Prince of Kiev and Christianizer of Rus, depicted in richly colored royal and ecclesiastical vestments — a red mantle over a green robe with gold embroidered hem — holding an Orthodox cross before his chest. A golden halo surrounds his head, and the figure is framed by elaborate gilt filigree-style interlaced ornamental borders on a contrasting black and silver ground. A Latin inscription identifying the subject appears in the upper portion of the ornamental border.

Additional information

Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has made it one of the more prolific bullion and commemorative issuing authorities of the 21st century, lending its sovereignty to series that would otherwise have no natural home. This piece belongs to a run of Ukrainian historical figures released around the time Ukraine was aligning politically westward — the Maidan protests and subsequent conflict with Russia erupted the same year this coin was struck.

Vladimir the Great's legacy is itself contested geopolitical territory: both Russia and Ukraine claim him as a founding figure, a dispute that is anything but academic given 2014's events.
