Additional information

Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, this toonie variant was part of a broader Canadian commemorative push in 2020 that aligned with international VE Day and VJ Day observances. Canada's wartime contribution — over one million served, with roughly 45,000 killed — has always given these anniversaries particular weight in domestic currency programming.

The bimetallic format dates to the toonie's introduction in 1996, when the two-piece construction caused early controversy after the centres began popping out of worn coins. The joining technology has since been revised multiple times.
