The "Tripartite" designation refers to a three-piece interlocking coin format issued by Cook Islands through the New Zealand Mint in the late 1990s, a period when the mint aggressively expanded its novelty collector programs for Pacific island territories. Cook Islands, a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, had no domestic circulation need for a 42-gram silver two-dollar piece — this was produced entirely for the philatelic and numismatic export market.
KM#321 is one of three coins designed to fit together as a single composite piece when assembled.
