Beschrijving keerzijde The central field depicts the war-devastated ruins of the Cloth Hall of Ypres rising on the left, rendered in detailed relief against a textured background evoking the scarred Flanders landscape. In the lower foreground, a horse-drawn artillery limber with mounted soldiers advances along a muddy road, commemorating the Allied advance during the Third Battle of Ypres. Three poppy blossoms appear in relief at the upper centre, serving as a symbol of remembrance. A period eyewitness quotation from Captain William Bunning of the 22nd Battalion (Victoria) is inscribed in the field, and the names of the five principal engagements of the campaign — MENIN RD, POLYGON WOOD, BROODSEINDE, POELCAPPELLE, and PASSCHENDAELE — are engraved along the lower border, separated by raised dots. The arc legend THE THIRD BATTLE OF YPRES with the dates 20 September – 12 October 1917 runs along the upper border.

Aanvullende informatie

The Third Battle of Ypres — better known as Passchendaele — ran from July to November 1917 across the waterlogged fields of Belgian Flanders, ultimately costing the British and Commonwealth forces roughly 275,000 casualties for an advance measured in miles. The ground itself was the enemy: artillery bombardment had destroyed the drainage infrastructure, turning the battlefield into a morass that swallowed men and equipment whole.

Niue has long operated as a prolific licensing jurisdiction for commemorative issues with no domestic circulation intent whatsoever. KM#4846 is a collector piece in the strictest sense.
