Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing agreements since the 1970s, and by the mid-2000s the program had expanded aggressively into themed collector series with little connection to the islands themselves. This piece belongs to that wave — a Sherlock Holmes literary series capitalizing on the centenary publishing market. Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles was first serialized in The Strand Magazine between 1901 and 1902, becoming the best-selling Holmes title in print within a year of its collected publication.
